Who will be Olympians?
BASED solely on the 23th SEA Games in the Philippines which was the
only multi-sports event held in 2005, the Olympic Council of Malaysia
(OCM) yesterday short-listed the nominees for the Olympian of the Year
award on Friday.
Question is, are the selectorss going to select the winners based on the
number of models won or on the quality of performance?
OCM secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said the final decision to pick the winners
will be made tomorrow.
"Our winners will come from those who excelled in the multi-sports
events held during the year'" said Kok Chi.
Six individual candidates and two teams have been nominated for the male
category, while there are seven individual athletes and one team vying
for the female award.
Heading the men's category is Ng Shu Wai who won three individual gold
medals and one team gold medal in men's artistic gymnastic. He remains
the first male gymnast to win more than two gold medals in biennial event.
Swinmmer Lim Keng Liat picked up two individual gold medals, in the 100m
and 200m backstroke while Daniel Bego won two individual gold medals,
in the 100m butterfly and 200m freestyle.
Another candidate from the pools is diver Yeoh Ken Nee who grabbed two
individual gold medals.
Archer Lian Hong Keong won one individual gold metal and one team gold
medal in compound bow while bowling's trios team comprising Daniel Lim,
Aaron Kong and Zulmazran Zulkifli also formed the team of five that grabbed
the gold.
Hurdler Shahadan Jamaluddin is also a nominees after becoming the first
Malaysian to win the men's 400m hurbles since Simit Bolkiah in 1977.
The sepak takraw regu team comprising Normanizam Ahmad, Mohamed Putra
Abd. Ghani, Mohd Zulkarnain Arif, Mohammed Saifuding Hussin and Mohammed
Azman Nasaruddin have been nominated for rising to the occasion and out
performing themselves to win the inter regu event, Malaysia's first gold
since the 1993 Singapore Games.
The women nominees are Foong Seow Ting who won three individual gold medals
and one team gold medal in rhythmic gymnastics, 2001 winner Leong Mun
Yee who scooped gold in 10m platform and one gold in 10m synchronised
diving, Ngew Sin Mei who broke the women's triple jump record, Roslinda
Sansu who soared to a new mark in women's pole vault, Siti Shahidah Abdullah
who cracked the hanner throw record, cyclist Nor Azian Alias, shooter
Bibiana Ng who shot down the SEA Games mark in 25m sports pistol and last
but not least, shuttlers Wong Pei Tty and Chin Eei Hui who won the women's
doubles team gold, our first since 1977.
OCM who held their seventh board meeting yesterday also deceded to present
a special award to squash star Nicol Ann David for her extraordinary outstanding
achievements.
Her CV reads two time World Junior Champion, 1998 Asian Games Champion,
the World Games gold medal, the British Open and the World Championship
and the World No 1 rank, all in 2005.
