Traders raise price of rice Some traders have
raised the price of local rice since last month,Sin Chew Daily
reported
Federation of Sundry Goods Merchants Associations of Malaysia president
Lean Hing Chuan said manufacturers had increased the price of rice by
eight sen a kg.
"Retailers have also increased the price by two sen a kg. Thus,the
price for a packet of 10kg rice has increased by RM1," he said.
He added that he was informed by munufacturers that the price would be
further increased in September. However,manufacturers refused to reveal
the quantum of increase Lean said.
Lean said to overcome this problem,the Government should do away with
the price ceiling for rice.
"Let the price be determined by the forces of supply and demand,"
he said.
Commenting on the sugar shortage,Lean said it was expected to be resolved
soon,as the Government would increase sugar supply by 50%.
He said this was announced by Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry
parliamentary secretary Hoo Seong Chang.
All major Chinese dailies highlighted the story of a 49-years-old father
who used his two children to pay off a debt.
The father,identified as Zhu, said je borrowed RM5,000 from a cousin on
July 2 and sent his 19-years-old son and 13-years-old daughter to work
for the relative.
"I now feel very remorseful and I want them to return to the family,"
he told a press conference called by DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
Zhu said he was forced to borrow the money as his motorcycle repair business
was not doing well.
He added that his children had called the family and cried,wanting to
return home.
Worried for their safety,Zhu said he had lodged a police report and was
willing to face the consequences of his action.
