ペナン：８月１日から実施されたペナンでのタクシーのメーター義務化に対し、５５人のタクシードライバーが依然として反発の構えをみせている。それに対し、CVLB代表のマーキマン・コビラン氏は14日間の猶予期間の間にこれらのドライバーから有効な返答が得られない場合、タクシー営業の免許を取り消すと話している。さらに、一度免許の取り消しになるとブラックリストに登録され、再度免許の申請をしなくてはならないだろうと語った。ペナンでは1047台のタクシーが運行中で、そのうち31台は技術的な問題で未だにメーターを設置していない。マーキマン氏は反発しているタクシードライバーに対し、タクシーにメーターを設置することで双方に利があると主張する。今回のメーターシステムの導入では初乗り１キロメートルRM３、その後１５０メートルごとに１０セントの課金がされるしくみになっている。

55 Penang taxi drivers hauled up

PENANG: Fifty-five taxi drivers here have been issued show-cause letters for not following the meter ruling, which was enforced on Aug 1.
Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) chairman Markiman Kobiran said the drivers had been given 14 days to reply to the letters or have their permits revoked.
"Many were not using meters while the rest were caught overcharging despite using meters.
"If they can give us a valid reason, no action will be taken against them. Otherwise, we have no choice but to revoke their permits," he told a press conference yesterday.
Markiman said once the permits were revoked, the taxi drivers' names would be blacklisted and it would be tough for them to apply for new permits.
Markiman said of the 1,047 taxis in Penang, 31 were still not calibrated with meters due to technical problems.
"I don't deny that there are good law-abiding taxi drivers but many still refuse to cooperate with us. They fail to see that the meter ruling could be a win-win situation for all parties.
"If they use meters, there will be more passengers and our tourism industry can also flourish,"he said.
Under the meter system, passengers pay RM3 for the first kilometere and 10 sen for every subsequent 150m.
