Last goodbye to fire victims
MALACCA: The air was thick with sorrow and tears as
hundreds of mourners packed a funeral parlour here to send off four children
who perished in a fire at Kampung Bandar Hilir on Wednesday.
Many people lined the street of followed the cortege bearing the remains
of the young victims for about 1km from the Bukit Cina funeral parlour
to Jalan Munshi Abdullah.
At the end of the procession,the four coffins were loaded onto a hearse,which
headed to Jelutong for the cremation of the children - siclings Lim Ju
Seng,nine,Ju Huan,seven and Laishen,six,and their aunt Lio Choon Yee,13.
They had been trpped in their burning house because the windows had grilles.
The Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Malacca Tun Khalil Yaakob was among those
who came to pay their last respects to the victims before the funeral.
Family members consoled a wailing Lio Chun Ying,who is the mother of the
three siblings,as the coffins were bring carried out one by one from the
funeral parlour.
Among those who joined the funeral procession were the children's schoolmates
and teachers,members of various organisations as well as relatives and
family friends.
Choon Yee's schoolmate at SMK Canossa Convent,Form One student Siti Nur
Zulaikah Md Rashid,sobbed when she looked at her friend's picture.
"I had just helped her to apply some nutmeg oil last week when she
was complaining of a stomach ache after taking nasi lemak, and
now,she's gone," she said
At Seri Bendahara,Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, who is acting Bakti president,presented
a donation of RM3,000 to Lio and her husband Lim Kok Sing,and RM2,000
to Joanna Lee,who is Choon Yee's mother.
The Welfare Organization for Wives of Elected Representatives in Malacca
(Bistari) also donated RM3,000 to Lio and Lim,while the state gave the
couple RM3,600 and Lee RM3,200.
