Billowing smoke causes two accidents on expressway
BUKIT MERTAJAM: Thick smoke from open burning activities
at a padi field in Kubang Semang caused two accidents involving eight
vehicles at kilometre 7.2 of the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway(BKE).
Five cars were involved in a pile-up on the stretch heading toward Butterworth
while another three cars hit each other on the opposite side.
The driver of a Honda Accord, in his 30s,who sustained head injuries, was
rushed to Seberang Jaya Hospital by passers-by.
Prai fire station chief Sohimee Hashim said a distress call was received
at 3.20pm,adding that seven fire engines, including five voluntary engines, were
deployed to the scene.
"Strong winds swept the smoke to the highway causing low visibility,"
he said, adding that the fire, which covered about 4ha,was put out within
30 minutes.
Businesswoman Rohaya Abdul Majid said her Proton Wira spun twice when
it hit a car in front of her.
"I was going for a meeting on the island from Lunas when I noticed
thick smoke billowing across the highway.
"I quickly swithed on my hazard lights and slowed down. But I lost
control of my vehicle when a car suddenly knocked me from behind,"
she said.
BKE operator Konsortium Lebuhraya Butterworth-Kulim Sdn Bhd general manager
Abdul Razak Othman said that padi field owners usually did not inform
the company about burning activities.
He said they should be made to apply for permits before carrying open
burning.
