From Japan to NS camp
PENANG : She flew all the way back from Japan to fulfil
her duty and refused to quit despite an old back injury that kept recurring.
Best Trainee for Kem Universiti Utara Malaysia Natsumi Boudville Nishikawa,18,who
lives with her family in Japan, initially applied to be excused from national
service (NS) but the patriotic Fukuoka International School student decided
to return.
"I called the NS hotline in December last year and was told that
I was selected to join the first batch of trainees in January, but I was
having my exams then."
"They allowed me to join the June session at UUM in Sintok,"
Natsumi was part of the first batch of NS trainees to learn how to fire
M16 rifles with live ammunition.
"I had the best time ever during the three months at camp.It was
like a fun summer holiday.I washed clothes, polished shoes and cleaned
the room every morning for the first time in my life.
"I have always loved the outdoors and had a chance to go jungle trekking
and canoeing.Firing the M16 was such an exciting experience for me and
I even managed to hit the bull's eye once,"she laughed.
Her grandmother,Marie Boudville,70,said her eldest granddaughter could
only speak Japanese and English and had been living in Japan she was two.
"I was very worried because she has never been away from her family,"she
said, adding that during her first week there,Natsumi used to call back
crying every day.
"By the second week, she had already adapted to her new surroundings."
Natsumi said reporting for training was a cultural shock.
"i couldn't speak a word of Malay and only a handful of those at
the camp could speak English."
"Fortunately, everyone was very friendly and I ended up learning a
bit of the language,"she said, adding that she did not expect to win
the Best Trainee award.
Natsumi will be flying back to Japan tomorrow.
"NS is actually the country serving you and not the other way around.
You learn so much here and meet so many people. It is one of the best experiences
for a teenager,"she said.
St Xavier's Institution students Kevin Yew and Jason Kung, both 17,who
were visiting Natsumi, said NS training sounded exciting.
"I am disappointed that I was not selected for NS after hearing so
much about it from Natsumi,"Kevin said.
