Six goods wagons jump rails
BUKIT MERTAJAM: About 700 passengers on two trains were
stranded when a north-bound goods train derailed at Km8 of the Penanti-Tasek
Gelugor stretch here.
The incident,which happened at 12.39pm yesterday temporarily disrupted
services between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.
KTM Bhd said in a statement that services were expected to resume by noon
today.
It said eight buses were used to ferry the affected passengers to their
respective destinations.
"The passengers on Express Kuala Lumpur-Haadyai were ferried by bus
from the Taiping station to the Sungai Petani station,where they resumed
their journey by train.
"Likewise,the passengers on Express Haadyai-Kuala Lumpur were ferried
by bus from the Sungai Petani station to the Taiping station,where they
continued their journey by train," the company said.
KTM said the train plying the Bangkok-Butterworth route was halted when
it reached Sungai Petani.
As for the Butterworth-Bangkok route,passengers had to board the train
in Sungai Petani.
In the incident,six wagons of the 20-wagon train that was transporting
containers from Prai to Padang Besar jumped the tracks.
Kampung Kuala Mengkuang resident Shahabudin Ishak,33,who lives 15km from
the tracks,said he was getting ready to attend Friday prayers when he
heard a loud crash.
"I was shocked to see some of the wagons had tilted over,while others
had slipped from the tacks," he said.
He said it was drizzling at the time of the incident.
