Body of pilot recovered
KUALA TERENGGANU: The body of the pilot of the Super
Puma helicopter that crashed into the South China Sea while attempting
to land on an oil platform on Sunday has been found.
State police chief Senior Asst Comm I Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said Kapt
Mohd Salleh Teguh's body was found in the cockpit of the helicopter at
3.30pm yesterday.
He said an unmanned deep-sea remote operated vehicle (ROV) owned by ExxonMobil
Exploration and Production Malaysia Inc (EMEPMI) found the wreckage some
60m from the sea surface.
The chopper with 21 on board crashed while approaching Tapis B platform
at 11.45am on Sunday.
It split into two after crashing into the sea about 200m from the platform.
The co-pilot and 19 passengers comprising contact workers of EMEPMI were
rescued,
SAC Acryl Sani said the recovery of the pilot's body was delayed due to
the rough seas.
He added the operation to detect the wreckage and the missing pilot involved
100 rescuers and frogmen from several agencies led by the Royal Malaysian
Navy.
In Kuantan,Kapt Mohd Salleh's wife Mariana Hamdan,47,said
she accepted the death of her husband,and would move on in life together
with her four children.
"I accept what had happened to my husband as part and parcel of life.
"My 10-year-old son Mohd Najmi will miss his father the most,all
of us will,"she said at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital where she
claimed her husband's remains.
Mariana said they had planned to visit Langkawi during the school holidays
as they did not "balik kampung" during the Hari Raya.
"I noticed my husband was trying to get close to God before the fasting
month by performing prayers more often at the surau.
"It never occurred to me his sudden change in behavior will lead
to this," Mariana said.
