IT centres for small towns
TAIPING : The Housing and Local Government Ministry
has launched a programme to set up computer centres with Internet access
in smaller towns, to help reduce the digital divide between rural and
urban areas.
It has identified six locations throuhout the country for the pilot project,
funded via a RM2mil Government allocation, where the public , especially
students , could learn to use computers from qualified tutors as well
as surf the net.
Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting opened the
first centre at the Pokok Assam Public Library at the Pokok Assam New
Village here yesterday.
"We want to encourage villagers to learn how to use the computers
so that we can help reduce the digital gap between the rural and town
population," he told reporters after touring the centre.
Ong,who is also MCA president, said the other five locations had been
identified and this would be announced later.
He said the centres would not be confined to new villages but in places
where flat dwellers and those living in traditional villagers could have
access as well.
The centres would be located in areas within the jurisdiction of the local
authorities that were under the purview of the ministry.
Ong said more of such centres would be set up throughout the country once
the Government approved the necessary funds.
"This programme commensurates with the national goal of equipping
people to face globalisation," he said.
Ong said qualified tutors would be stationed at the centres that would
have their own portals.
To another a question, Ong said the success of the centres would also
depend on the willingness of community leaders to support the programme.
Ong also posed for photographers at a tamarind tree that he planted during
a visit there in 2003 and received a photo taken at that time by K. Balakrishnan,55,a
barber.
