New frog species found
PENANG : A team of Universiti Sains Malaysia researchers
have found a new species of frog at Gunung Jerai.
Assoc Prof Ibrahim Jaafar from the School of Distance Education said the
male frog of the Rana monjerai species had pouches in the throat
that differentiated it from other frog species.
"These gular pouches are for calling out to the females, which outsize
the males. So far this species has only been known to exist on Gunung
Jerai. The specimens were found perching on rocks and sandy banks along
a mountain stream," he said yesterday.
He said these frogs had slender bodies un webbed feet and long hind limbs.
Assoc Prof Ibrahim said most of the South-East Asian Rana species
were discovered in Vietnam and Laos.
"The discovery is good news for Malaysia, which is one among 12 countries
in the world acknowledged for mega bio-diversity," he added.
Assoc Prof Ibrahim said their next step was to study the species' habitat, food, reproduction
and growth.
"This species and other similar ones are mostly found in rivers and
streams that are clean, clear, unpolluted and undisturbed, They can be considered
as biological indicators for assessing the health of a river system or
the environment as a whole,"he said, adding that there were now 105
listed species of frogs in the peninsula, out of the 165 in the country.
