高級缶詰が万引きの的に

ペナン：チャイニーズニューイヤーを間近に控えたこの時期、万引き達の動きが活発になってきた。特に一缶RM100前後のあわびやはまぐり等の高級缶詰が万引きの的にされている。スイワコーポレーション総支配人のイー・カム・リンさんは過去三ヶ月のチェックをしたところ、万引き犯はサンシャイン系列のスーパーマーケットを中心に狙っていると話した。お祭りシーズンになるとスチームボートをする家庭が多く、魚介類の需要が高まるため、いつもより多く仕入れていると話した。また対策として高級缶詰はガラスケースの中に入れ、安い缶詰は棚に載せていると話していた。万引き犯達の他の的を挙げると、お酒類や小物類、さらには服も盗っていくという。以前、警察に引き渡した万引き犯は外においてあった自転車の中に盗ったものを置いてあり、盗品総額なんとRM1,000になったという。こういったケースで捕まえた場合、すぐさま裁判に持ち込んでいき、2度とこの店に入れないようにしておきたいとイーさんは怒りを隠せない様子で話した。

Canned abalone, clams popular with shoplifters

PENANG: Cans of imported seafood like abalone, limpets sea asparagus and Pacific clams, some costing more than RM100, have become a popular target of shoplifters during the current festive season.

The cans, which are labelled locally, are imported from Chile, Mexico, South Africa and Australia.

Suiwah Corporation Bhd general manager Yee Kam Ming said shoplifters had been busy at its Sunshine chain of supermarkets in Bayan Baru, Farlim, Jelutong and Bukit Mertajam over the last three months.

“We bring in more of these items during the festive season as they are in demand for steamboat meals,” he said yesterday.

“But following the thefts, we now put the expensive canned food in locked-up glass display cabinets, and the cheaper varieties on open shelves.”

The most expensive seafood displayed is abalone from Australia that costs RM127 per 425gm can.

Other products popular with shoplifters during the festive season are clothes, liquor and wine, while expensive infant formula and small items such as batteries, toothbrushes and cosmetics are perennial favourites.

At Sunshine Square, rows of batteries and toothbrushes, particularly the more expensive battery-operated variety, are now chained and locked up.

Yee said in cases involving small items and students, parents were called in and the shoplifter was let off after being advised, but the police would be called in for bigger cases.

“One suspect was handed over to the police after being caught while making a second trip to load RM1,000 worth of batteries into his motorcycle basket outside Sunshine Square.

“Even before this case was called up to court, he was caught stealing batteries again at Sunshine Farlim,” said Yee.
