恋に遅すぎるということはない

ペナン：恋をするのに遅すぎるということはない。今年78歳になるン・アー・シューさんはMCA（マレーシア華人協会）主催のバレンタイン・パーティーで愛しき人に出会った。「彼女は60歳代だけど人間的にすばらしい人でお互いの電話番号を交換もしたよ」とンさんは楽しそうに話す。ンさんは今回のパーティーに参加した人の中で最高齢。妻を７年前に亡くしている。今回家族の後押しもありパーティーに参加することを決意した。

「最も大切なのはお互いの相性」とンさんはインタビューに応える。このパーティーはペナンのMCA女性グループの支援などもあり、男女それぞれ５０人の参加者を集め、エバーグリーン・ラウレル・ホテルで開催された。このパーティはすばらしい出会いに恵まれない独身者のために開かれたもので、MCAはそういった独身者からの強い要望を受けていた。特に中国人女性で教員の結婚が遅れているとMCA女性グループのチーフ、ウーイ・シュー・キムさんは話していた。

It’s never too late to love again

PENANG : It is never too late for love ? this is the firm belief of widower Ng Ah Shoo.

Romance may be in the air for the 78-year-old retired engineer who met another lonely soul at the MCA Cupid Club Valentine's Day gathering.

“She is in her 60s and seems to be a very nice person. We have exchanged phone numbers and promised to keep in touch.

“However, it is still too soon to tell whether this will blossom into anything yet,” he said.

Ng, who was the oldest person at the gathering, said he was feeling lonely after his wife died seven years ago.

Backed by his family, he decided to join the event in the hope of finding love, said the grandfather of six.

As to the qualities he sought, he said: “Her age is not a factor but she should possess good manners.

“The most important thing is there must be chemistry between us. Without that, there is no foundation for a solid relationship,” he said in an interview.

Held at Evergreen Laurel Hotel, the event was jointly organised by Penang Wanita MCA and Penang Wanita Chinese Town Hall to give participants an opportunity to socialise. It was attended by 50 women and 50 men.

Penang Wanita MCA chief Ooi Siew Kim said the event was held after she received numerous phone calls from anxious singles and parents who wanted a chance to meet prospective partners.

“There are many Chinese female teachers who are unmarried.”
