225棟が煙におおわれる

ランカウィ：昨日、ランカウィにあるイスラム教徒の集落であるブキット・マルが火事により煙に覆われた。およそ225棟が炎につつまれたが、消防士らが海岸からポンプで水を吸い出したことにより火は鎮火し、残りの約300棟に火が燃え移ることは免れた。この火事により1,067人の人達が家をなくしたが、幸いにも死傷者は出なかった。消防局に勤めているロスディ・イスマルさんは燃え広がるのが予想以上に速く、大きかったが火災現場が海岸沿いであったことや十分な消防設備もあり迅速な鎮火が出来てよかったと話した。さらにロシディさんは火事の原因について、巨大な集落で未だ火事の影響もあり火事の原因はまだ分かっていないと話した。この集落での火事は2005年以来であり、完全に燃え尽きた家は200棟を超えるという

LANGKAWI: Some 225 homes went up in smoke at a Muslim settlement in Bukit Malut here, and water pumped from the seafront saved another 300 homes from being gutted.

Firemen resorted to pumping water from the sea to fight the raging fire that left 1,067 people homeless within hours. No casualties were reported.

Asst Supt Rosdi Ismail from the Langkawi Fire and Rescue Department said the blaze was too big for his men to fight using conventional hoses.

“We had to use war jet pumps used to put out forest fires. We used maximum force and utilised all the equipment to save as much as we could,” he said, adding that three war jet pumps and two float pumps were deployed.

Four officers and 55 firemen sped to the site after receiving a call at 2.18pm. They managed to bring the situation under control by 3.35pm.

Rosdi said the cause of fire had yet to be ascertained as the colony was very large.

This is the second fire in the settlement since 2005.

The earlier fire destroyed 200 homes.
