‘Kidnapped’ ‘girl rescued MIRI: He was head over heels in love with a 16-year-old girl. But he was jobless and her family did not approve of him. So the man, in his 20s, “kidnapped” the girl and bundled her on board a cargo vessel which arrived in peninsular Malaysia over the weekend. He then threatened her family that he would sell her into prostitution if they did not pay him money. Police rescued the girl in Kuala Lumpur last Sunday and the man, who apparently got wind that the police were on the case, returned here and was arrested the same day. On Tuesday, the girl, a Form Four student, was flown here and reunited with her family. Miri police chief Asst Comm Abang Abdillah Abang Othman said: “Now that the suspect has been arrested and the victim rescued I can confirm the incident. “From our initial investigations, the suspect was said to be her (victim’s) ‘boyfriend’. He was interested in her, but somehow things did not work out for him. “Because he had taken her away forcefully and demanded money from her family, this is considered an act of kidnapping for ransom.” ACP Abdillah said the girl's parents alerted police after they received the call from the man. “Police in Kuala Lumpur managed to track her whereabouts and rescue her. At the same time, we (Miri police) found that the ‘boyfriend’ had returned to Miri. We arrested him,” he said. This is the second success for police in recent days. On Monday, seven men were arrested here over the kidnapping of a timber
camp manager. He was rescued unharmed at Miri Airport.
