Origami veteran shows how it’s done

Transforming plain paper into intricate artwork is a passion that Chan Chong Hin has indulged in all his life through the art of origami.

A chemist as well as a musician, Chan began taking an interest in the Japanese art at the tender age of 10 when he folded his first origami animal and in 1980, he become a member of the British Origami Society. He remained a member for 10 years.

“I find origami very interesting; it’s amazing that we can give a piece of paper ‘life’ through origami. Now it’s a sheet of paper, and the next thing you know, it becomes an animal,” explained Chan who is self-taught.

Chan believes that origami is a good method to help children in their learning process.

“Origami requires working from a two-dimensional drawing and turning it into a three-dimensional object using paper. You need to analyse and think how you can portray a drawing in three-dimensional shape and that helps children enhance their creative thinking,” he said.

“This creative part of origami really helps children draw connections between their academic work and real-life elements.”

At his workshop at Isetan KLCC in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, Chan drew a large curious crowd of both youngsters and adults who watched intently as he demonstrated the art.

Even after the workshop, many enthusiasts followed Chan around as he explained his different origami animals on display.

“This origami exhibition is being held in conjunction with the Japan Fair and it features Chan’s personal collection,” said Isetan advertising and promotion manager Then Kok Seong.

The exhibition is divided into different themes that Chan has created, including ‘Forest of Malaya’, ‘Living in Australia’, ‘Beetles and Spiders’, ‘Peacock’, ‘Dinotopia’ and ‘Crustacean’.

Animals and elements of a particular “world” are featured in the respective themes, like various dinosaur origami in the world of Dinotopia.

“All these pieces are not for sale because they are my own collection and there are some pieces that I have kept for 20 years. The papers used to fold these pieces are also very rare,” Chan said.

Among the pieces that Chan designed himself are the Concorde, kangaroo, rabbit, squirrel, eagle and gorilla.

“We wanted to bring in this exhibition because we want to promote this kind of creative hobby and hopefully this habit will catch on among the public. Chan is an origami enthusiast rather than a professional, and we want to show that it’s something that everyone can do and they, too, can create their own designs,” Then explained.

There are instructions on display at the exhibition where the public can just pick up the special paper provided and try their hand at folding simple shapes.

“We are providing some free paper and help to get them started. There are also books on origami for sale if they want to learn more about the art,” Then said.

The origami exhibition will be on at the concourse floor of Isetan KLCC until tomorrow.
