Look out for insects in water to see if river is clean LANGKAWI: The Drainage and Irrigation Department is drawing up a biological indicator module for students to be able to assess river water quality. The module would be introduced in schools by this August to teach students how to monitor the cleanliness level of rivers using insects as indicators, DID senior deputy director (river section) Dzulkifli Abu Bakar said. He said the department was collaborating with the Education Ministry on the module. “This method is very simple as it does not require expensive tools. We need only to observe the insects found in the water. “Some insects can only live in very clean water, while others survive in dirty waters. “This biological indicator is one of the simplest ways to monitor water quality,” he said after opening a workshop to prepare the “Biological Indicator Module” with teachers from Institut Perguruan Bahasa Melayu Malaysia. The participants will be using biological and chemical methods to assess the quality of water in Sungai Tok Tukang today and Sungai Kilim tomorrow. Dzulkifli said the module could be incorporated into the school curriculum and co-curricular activities. “This is one way of making the children care for the environment,” he
added.
