長時間の雨でマラッカが洪水

マラッカ　:　昨日の9時30分から4時間もの間マラッカに降り続いていた豪雨で１０の家屋が水に浸かった。長時間の雨は土手を崩し10棟の民家を襲ったが、0.5ｍの高さまで水位があがった所で避難の命令がでたという。

牧場主であるヤハヤ・ザカリアさん（65）は被害者の一人であり、今回の洪水は今までの経験で最悪の洪水だと語る。また別の被害者であるモハッド・ニザム･ユヌスさん（32）は家にある電化製品全てが洪水によって浸水してしまったと悔しそうに話す。被害者一同、配水管がもっと大きかったらこんな事にはならなかったのでは？と政府に訴えているという。

ダトゥック・セリ・モハッド・アリ・ラスタム氏は事故当日、ちょうど被害エリアに訪問していた。事故を体験したアリ氏は、洪水防止システムの粗末なメンテナンスがわかり灌漑局に問題ありと指摘した。このマラッカの地域を開拓した費用はＲＭ2800万の大金がかかっているにも関わらずメンテナンスが行き届いてないのは遺憾であると語る。マラッカ州のみだけではなく灌漑局は全ての防止システムのメンテナンスをするようにとアリ氏は話した。

More dry days expected from July to September

PETALING JAYA: A four-hour downpour caused several areas in the state to experience flash floods, with 10 families being evacuated here.

The rain, which started at about 9.30am yesterday, caused the Sungai Putat in Batu Berendam to burst its banks, causing waist-level floods in the area.

The flooded areas included Bertam Ulu, Paya Rumput, Rembia, Tanjung Minyak and the Media House Complex at the Malacca International Trade Centre (MITC).

Ten families from Sungai Putat were evacuated to the Japerun complex at Sungai Putat after the water rose to 0.5m for fear that it would get worse.

At Kampung Sungai Petai, Alor Gajah, where waters rose to chest level, farmer Yahaya Zakaria, 65, said this was the worse flooding he had experienced.

“If the drains were made bigger, then maybe this would not have happened,” he said.

Mohd Nizam Mohd Yunus, 32, a businessman from Paya Rumput, said the water level started rising at around 10.30am.

“The water came in very fast and my electrical items like the washing machine and refrigerator were submerged and spoiled in the flood,” he said.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam who visited some of the flood-hit areas yesterday, said poor maintenance of drainage and irrigation systems was the problem.

He said it was useless to have flood prevention facilities if they were not properly maintained.

Mohd Ali said he wanted better maintenance, especially at the MITC.

“This place was built with some RM28mil. It was such a huge investment, but maintenance has not been properly done.”

The Chief Minister also said that the state government had requested for a RM123mil allocation from the federal government to repair irrigation and drainage systems in the state.

Meanwhile, Alor Gajah Municipal Council president Baharum Majid said the drains were unable to accommodate the sudden and large amount of water caused by “abnormal rain”.

“We will make sure that the new housing areas such as Awan Biru have good drainage systems so that this does not happen there,” said Baharum.
