Helmet project a huge success PUTRAJAYA: Two months after the launch of a project to encourage motorcyclists to wear crash helmets in Kuang, Selangor, the number of deaths from bike accidents dropped to zero, compared with two deaths in the two months before the start of the programme. “In the neighbouring village of Ijok, where no such project was held, fatal motorcycle accidents continued to climb from two to four deaths,” Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said. Chan said the Ministry’s pilot project to encourage rural folk in Kuangto wear helmets will be expanded nationwide after the number of people using helmets rose from 62% to 82%. “We also saw a reduction in motorcycle accidents and injuries to motorcyclists and pillion rider,” he said. Chan said about 6,000 people died in road accidents annually and 58% of them were motorcyclists and pillion riders. “Some 60% of them (motorcyclists and pillion ride riders) die of head injuries because they do not wear helmets or not wear them properly. “Based on our research, if we can have 100% helmet compliance, 750 lives can be saved nationwide (a year),” he told reporters yesterday. He was speaking at a briefing ceremony to evaluate the impact of the community-based initiative to encourage rural folk to wear helmets. Chan added that the programme in Kuang would be continued, and expanded to rural areas nationwide. “I want to see 100% compliance in Kuang,” said Chan who was happy with the outcome of the project in Kuang which was carried out between January and April this year. Chan said a total of 19,975 helmets, including 1,925 bicycle helmets
for children, were given away, courtesy of the National Academy of Motorsports
Malaysia, to 16 villages, housing schemes and 14 schools.
