CCTVs watch village LABIS: Waking up to the fact that everyone has the responsibility to fight crime, a community project to install closed-circuit television cameras (CCTVs) has taken place in Bekok. There are now three CCTVs at the entrance of the village, overlooking the main roads, while another will monitor the street where a bank is located. The project, initiated by Labis MP Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, cost RM35,000. “This is my pilot project and I will do it at other places in my constituency,” he said on a recent visit. Dr Chua said he was in the midst of identifying strategic locations to install CCTVs in Labis. Village head Tan Siang Lock thanked Dr Chua for the allocation. “Although our village is quite safe, prevention is always better than cure. “We do not want to wait until something bad happens before we act,” he said. Segamat OCPD Supt Abdul Majid Mohd Ali said the CCTVs could help them monitor illegal racing in the village. He said police would also get to know if any strange faces or vehicles were in the vicinity and monitor them. “Most of the crime cases in the village are motorcycle thefts. “Bekok is always a safe and peaceful village,” he said, adding that only one report was lodged over the past few months. Supt Abdul Majid said personnel at the Bekok police station would monitor the CCTVs. He urged areas with high crime rates in the district to work hand-in-hand
with the police to fight crime.
