50,000 brave rain to enjoy show

BUKIT JALIL: The rain and bad weather did not dampen the spirits of 50,000-odd people who turned up at the Bukit Jalil Stadium to watch the 50th Merdeka Anniversary Culture and Arts Performance here last night.

Covered in plastic ponchos and holding umbrellas, the spectators braved the rain as they marvelled at the cultural performances.

The fanfare-like atmosphere began even before the show kicked off. Many had their portraits drawn for free by 30 staff members and students of the One Academy who had set up small stalls to accommodate the large crowd.

Tens of thousands of herbal eggs were also handed out for spectators to nibble on before the show.

The two-day event, which kicked off on Saturday was organised by the MCA, Federation of Chinese Guilds and Associations, Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Malaysia, the Malaysia Seven Clans Association, Malaysian Chinese Cultural Society and other Chinese-based organisations.

Fifty-year-old How Siew Eng, who is wheelchair-bound, was excited to be part of the show.

“It is just a little rain. It doesn’t bother me at all, just as long as I get to be a part of this great event,” said the housewife, holding her two-year-old granddaughter tightly in her arms.

Her granddaughter too seemed spellbound by a lion dance performance.

Among the performances, which captivated the audience, was a dance depicting how the community’s ancestors had thrived in Malaysia and later becoming an integral part of the nation.

An enchanting line up of artistes also wowed the crowd throughout the night, but none more so than local stars Michael Wong and Erra Fazira.

The crowd cheered and sang along during the duo’s performance.

Other artistes who performed included Candy Cheah, Danny One, Andrew Tay and Yang Wei Hung.

Twelve-year-old Chook An Yee, who came with her group of friends, was excited that they could get up close to their idol Andrew Tay.

“He’s just so cute and such a good singer,” a delighted An Yee said.

She added that she loved the various booths that had been set outside the stadium by StarRFM prior to the concert.

“We had such a great time playing the games that were organised there,” she said.

The highlight of the event was a spectacular fireworks performance that lit up the night sky.
