Lower speed limit for CNY

PUTRAJAYA: The speed limit on state and federal roads will be lowered from 90kph to 80kph during the annual festive traffic operations this Chinese New Year.

A total of 6,562 enforcement personnel from the police and Road Transport Department (JPJ) will be deployed nationwide to carry out overt and covert operations under the operation codenamed Ops Sikap XVI.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said yesterday the operation would be on from Jan 31 to Feb 14.

Chan said the Prime Minister’s wife Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah was scheduled to officially launch the festive operation on Feb 2 at KL Sentral station.

He said the annual integrated traffic operations would also concentrate on covert enforcement work.

“JPJ officers in unmarked vehicles will be using video cameras to record traffic offenders who jump queue or commit other traffic offences,” said the transport minister, adding that maximum compound fines of RM300 would slapped on those committing the six serious traffic offences.

The six offences are reckless driving, speeding, running the red light, overtaking on double lines, driving on emergency lanes and jumping queues.

Chan said a recent study showed that 45% of motorists were now aware that they could be easily caught during traffic operations.

Motorists’ perception of being caught for traffic offences increased from 27% to 45% during the last Ops Sikap, he said.

Chan also announced that plainclothes JPJ officers would pose as passengers on express buses to check on reckless drivers, while all express buses would be inspected before they left major bus terminals in the country.

He said during the last Ops Sikap, there were 40 fewer deaths involving motorcyclists and pillion riders than previously.

Chan said the annual ban on heavy vehicles from roads would be on Feb 5 and 6, on Feb 9 and 10.

“The Works Ministry has agreed to stop all road works, unless it is really necessary, on all road in the country,” he said.
