Mydin to build biggest Malaysian hypermart in Kota Baru KOTA BARU: One of the top supermarket chains in the country, Mydin Wholesale Emporium Sdn Bhd, now plans to establish the biggest hypermarket in Malaysia at the New Tunjong Township here. The proposed RM100mil facility would sit on 7.2ha of land with a built-up area covering 650,000 sq ft and generating close to 3,000 of direct and indirect employment opportunities. It is billed as the largest retail operator in Kelantan. Mydin’s managing director Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin said the company's chain of supermarkets and hypermarkets have their own niche. Having been born and bred in the east coast state, he said it was only logical to invest here. He was speaking to reporters after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Mydin and Tunjong Development Corporation Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of the Mentri Besar Incorporated entity. Ammer said earthworks should begin by July and operations should commenced by July, next year. “It is a fast-track project and the construction of a hypermarket is not an arduous feat in terms of its build-up and surrounding infrastructure. We are confident of unveiling it by next year.” Ameer acknowleged that competition for a slice in the hypermarket pie is getting stiffer by the year, what with the presence of foreign operators such as Giant, Tesco, Carrefour and regional players. However, Ameer said Mydin has carved a reputable
niche for itself especially in the Muslim market here.
