Two divers missing off Miri MIRI: Two divers went missing in the South China Sea on Friday while trying to repair an oil tanker that was berthing some five nautical miles off the coast here. The divers, Hii teck Heng and Chew King Jung, were working for a ship-repair contractor from Bintulu at the time. On Friday morning, they went offshore to repair the ocean-going carrier Bunga Kelana 6. They left Miri at about 8am but they failed to come back ashore. A police report was lodged Friday afternoon, and a massive search and rescue mission is now underway, said a spokesman from the Miri Fire and Rescue Department. The marine police and the police air wing have also been roped in for the search and rescue operation. As of 7pm Friday there was still no sign of the divers. It is said that rough waves are hampering the search on the sea surface. A department spokesman on Friday said several teams of search personnel had been despatched to comb the area where the ship was berthed. "The divers entered the waters to check on the ship's anchors, but they did not surface. We received an SOS for help from the ship and we have informed our counterparts in the marine police. "The weather was fine when the incident happened," he said.
