Special police squad to escort torch runners KUALA LUMPUR: The police Special Action Squad (Unit Tindakan Khas or UTK) will accompany the Olympic torch bearers during its Malaysian leg on Monday. This is to ensure that there would be no untoward incidents during the event, City Internal Security and Public Order chief Asst Comm K. Kumaran said. “Personnel from this unit will be in their full operational uniform and will run with the torch bearers,” he told a press conference at the Tun H.S. Lee police station here yesterday. Besides protection from the squad, ACP Kumaran said the number of police personnel on the ground would also be increased from 600 to 1,000. He said the police would not hesitate to take stern action against anyone who tries to disrupt the run. “We are well-prepared to counter any form of disturbance from anyone or any organisation,” he added. The torch run is scheduled to start at 2.25pm from Dataran Merdeka and would take a 16.5km route through the city and end at KLCC at 6.15pm. The relay route would pass Wisma OCM, City Hall, Parliament House, National Museum, National Mosque, Old Railway Station, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall and Merdeka Stadium. After a short break at Merdeka Stadium, the relay will resume with the torch making its way to the top of KL Tower before it makes its final stop at KLCC. The Olympic flame is scheduled to arrive in Malaysia in the early hours of Sunday. After the run in Kuala Lumpur, it will be flown to Jakarta. Security concerns have heightened when similar events in London and Paris saw anti-Chinese and pro-Tibetan independence protesters trying to disrupt the run. The runs in San Francisco and other cities had to be cut short or rerouted to deter protests and other security concerns. ACP Kumaran said several major roads here would be closed to traffic in stages. Policemen would be stationed at all junctions and traffic light junctions of roads leading to the route of the relay to control and divert traffic. He said Dataran Merdeka and its surrounding areas as well as Jalan Raja would be closed to traffic from 10am for several activities including cultural shows before the run. Police would tow away any vehicle parked along the relay route without prior notice. He advised those who wanted to watch the relay
to use public transport instead of driving.
