Merger of toy firms Takara and Tomy on the cards
TAKARA Co and Tomy Co are in the final stages of negotiations to merge
as early as next year to create Japan's fourth-largest toy and video game
maker,the Nihon Keizai newspaper reported without citing anyone.
The two companies,now the fifth and seventh-biggest in the industry in
Japan,will have combined sales of about 180 billion yen(RM6.5bilion) when
they maerge as early as January,the report said.Calls to the offices of
the Tokyo-based companies were not immediately returned.
Takara,which makes "Rika-chan"dolls and "ChoroQ" miniature
cars,will probably post a 15 billion yen loss in the year ended March
31,as it failed to produce new hit products and is hurt by a declining
birthrate in Japan,the newspaper said.
Tomy,which makes "Star Wars"figurines,and Takara will form a
company to produce online content that features their toy characters as
early as this year,the report said.-Bloomberg
