RM7.5 MIL DVD HAUL
KAJANG : More than 500,000 pirated DVDs worth about RM7.5 million were
seized from a storeroom in Jalan CJ1/63,Taman Cheras Jaya in Cheras yesterday.
A team , comprising 30 police personnel and 19 Domestic trade and Consumer
Affairs officers,raided the building at 5pm after staking out the place
for three days.
They found the DVDs neatly stacked in boxes.
However,workers,who were believed to be packing the goods,managed to escape
through the back door when they detected the officers via a closed circuit
camera at the entrance.
The Ministry's deputy director-general(enforcement),Mohd Roslan Mahayudin,said
the officers had to break through several heavily padlocked doors to enter
the premises.
"We believed the workers had escaped when they were alerted by our
presence.We found a CCTV camera at the front gate."he said.
Investigations revealed that the building was used by an international
syndicate to store the pirated DVDs befor dictributing them to the United
States and Europe.
This is based on the high quality products and inlays found.
"They are believed to have used Pos Lajyu to export the discs as
we found several pos Laju certificates among the pirated wares,"he
said.
Among the pirated movies are Kingdom Of Heaven,Seed of Chucky,XXX2 and
The Pacifier.
They also found inlays of Star Wars Episode 3 but could not find the discs.
The case is being investigated under Section 41 of the Copyright Act 1987
for possession of carries a fine of between RM2,000 and RM20,000 for each
infringed copy or a five-year jail term or both upon conviction.
