Heavy rain triggers floods in northern Japan
{ Tokyo ] Heavy rain this week trigered floods in parts of northern Japan,leaving
one person missing and at least five others injured, police said yesterday.
More than 330 mm (13in) of rain has fallen in Niigata prefecture(State)
since Monday,inundating hundreds of houses,washing away bridge s and triggering
mudslides in several cities.The Meteorological Agency said the region
faces the "highest risk in years"of disasters.
In Tochio City,a 74-year-old farmer went missing early yesterday after
leaving home to check nearby rice fields,and police suspect he may have
fallen into the swollen waters,a Niigata police spokesman said.
In nearby Uonuma,a mudslide hit a vehicle carrying five people,sweeping
it into a rice paddy five metres(17ft) below and injuring all five.Nearly
3,100 families living near swollen rivers or loosened hillsides in the
prefecture were evacuated to community centres and schools.Niigata spokesman
Atsushi Moriyama said.
