[ KUALA LUMPUR ] The phenomenon that is Mawi rages on with repeat orders
for his album of 'live' recordings.
As of yesterday evening,81,200 units have been sold.
The figure sets him apart as possibly the fastest selling act in the first
week of release, and definitely the first of its kind for a debut effort
which is not even a studio album.
Asmawi Ani,24,who hails from Kulai,Johor, won the third instalment of Akademi
Fantasia(AF) and since then,he has been the darling of the media for his
rags to riches story. He comes from a religious background in a Felda settlement.
The Best Of Mawi World, selling at Rm21 for CDs and RM16.80 per cassette,is
produced by Maestro Records and Zezz Entertainment and distributed by
Life Records. It features recordings of the 12 songs performed by Mawi
in the AF series.
Zezz Entertainment Group managing director Mohd Firhad Amat confirmed
the figures.
"On the first day,we shipped out 24,000 units nationwide and these
were immediately snapped up," he said "Yesterday,at noon, the
production side reported repeat orders totalling 17,000 within the last
48 hours.
"Within 24 hours,another 41,000 confirmed orders were received,bringing
the total to 81,200."
Nasyid group Raihan, which holds the all-time record of more than 700,000
units sold for their debut album,Puji-Pujian,in 1997,also holds the record
for fastest selling album in a day.
Their second album,Syukur,in 1999,had a first day ship-out of 50,000 units.
One of the closest competitors is Jamal Abdillah's Aku Penghibur,an album
featuring the singer doing covers, which has sold 38,000 so far.
The sale of that album, was spurred by the popularity of one of the songs,Gadis
Melayu, which was also one of the song 'assignments' coverd by Mawi during
the weekly Akademi Fantasia concerts.
