Bus plunges into ravine,52 UUM students injured
[ SINTOK ] A Universiti Utara Malaysia(UUM)bus carrying 60 students plunged
into a ravine here,injuring 52 of the students and the driver.
Three of the students ,who suffered broken bones ,have been admitted to
the Alor Star Hospital while the rest were given treatment at the UUM
Health Clinic.
The bus was taking the students to the Bukit Kachi residential college
when the accident happened at 4.20pm,said Kubang Pasu acting OCPD,ASP
Harison Othman.
He said a female student standing in the front portion of the bus lost
her balance and fell in the direction of the driver when the bus was going
uphill.
The driver lost control of the vehicle,which skidded to the left side
of the road,hit a lamp post and plunged into the four-metre ravine,he
added.
"The bus turned turtle,and the students got out through the shattered
windows."he said.
A final year accountancy student,Zuraini Atas,23,said the bus turned over
several times after hitting the lamp post and plunged into the ravine.
She injured her left leg when she stepped on glass fragments from a broken
window.
Director of UUM's Student Communications department,Mohd Zaini Nasri,said
the university had provided four counsellors to help the students overcome
the trauma caused by the accident.
He said the university would conduct an investigation on the accident.
